Titan To Publish Warhammer 40,000 Comics

16398_warhammer_40k_chaos

Titan Comics is set to publish a new comic book series based on Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 with the first issues due to hit the newsstands in September.

First brought to life as an epoch-definingly popular tabletop miniature wargame in 1987, Warhammer 40,000’s dark-gothic dystopian science-fiction universe pits an outnumbered human Imperium and its sometimes-allies against the eternal forces of Chaos, in a battle for control of the 41st millennium.

Now in its seventh edition of the tabletop game, Warhammer 40,000 continues to grow from strength to strength, gathering fans across the world through its games, novels and videogames. Numerous top-selling apps featuring the Warhammer 40,000 IP are also available for iOS and Android.

Aimed at fans and newcomers alike, Titan’s new series taps into Warhammer 40,000’s wealth of compelling characters, species, and searingly-memorable imagery to deliver accessible science-fiction action on an unmatched galactic canvas.

Whether it’s the iconic, power-armour-encased Space Marines holding the line against unspeakable forces of xenos; the frothing, Daemonic intensity of Chaos, corrupting all they touch; the squabbling, bodged-together Orks, riding roughshod over far-flung colonies; the exotic, long-lived Eldar wielding rare weaponry and rarer insight; the idealistic, mech-piloting forces of the Tau; the undying, endoskeletal hordes of the Necrons, or the starving forces of unnature, like the Tyranids, spitting death and destruction with every spurt of their chitinous cannons, the Warhammer 40,000 setting offers horrifying surprises and stunning sights at every turn – and the comics will explore them all!

The Titan/Games Workshop partnership will see the publication of brand-new, original comic stories produced by Titan Comics, who add Warhammer 40,000 to their expanding catalogue of wildly-successful licensed comics based on gaming properties including Assassin’s Creed, Deus Ex and Dark Souls.

More announcements soon.

Titan Announces Vikings Comic – Based On The TV Show

Titan Comics will continue in its mission to publish official comic book versions of every cult television success by launching a Vikings comic in the spring. Epic!

Vikings_1_Cover B Photo Variant

The comic book series will take place within the continuity of the third season of the show and will follow Ragnar Lothbrok as he leads his Northmen on a new saga of glory and plunder. This tale of politics, intrigue, betrayal and sword-swinging combat is penned by best-selling Big Finish and Titan Comics Doctor Who writer Cavan Scott and illustrated by Staz Johnson (Wolverine, Spider-Man).

“I have been a complete Viking geek ever since I visited the Yorvik Viking Centre in York as a kid,” says Scott. “After years of reading the sagas of the marauding Northmen I couldn’t wait for the Vikings series. I’ve loved every minute of the first three seasons and am absolutely thrilled to be bringing Ragnar, Lagertha, Rollo, Floki and the rest to the world of comics. I can promise you the same mix of melees, mysticism, blood and treachery as King Ragnar faces his toughest challenges yet. Who will desert him first, his gods or his men?”

Vikings is the critically acclaimed series from creator and sole writer Michael Hirst (ElizabethThe Tudors) and is a family saga about the lives and epic adventures of the raiders and explorers of the Dark Ages through the eyes of the Viking society.  It airs on the HISTORY in the States and on Amazon’s streaming service in the UK. It was the seventh most pirated TV show in 2015.

Titan has – justifiably – been promoting this SF thriller as something that’ll appeal to Ghost In The Shell and Akira fans. But if you truly want to get an idea of the style and tone of the first issue you need to think of live action remakes of both those films directed by Luc Besson, because there’s a definite flavour of The Fifth Element in here too. It’s quite brutal SF in some respects but it’s also bright and cheery and colourful in others.

The first issue is effective curtain raiser, quickly establishing the main characters (a bunch of bantering investigators in something called the Special Operations Force), the world (a futuristic city in Portugal) and the mystery (rogue cyborgs chasing an android) in broad, bold strokes. The subtlety comes in the detail; Araújo’s visuals are full of storytelling detail that builds the world and the characters without explicitly drawing attention to themselves. Read placards. Look around the background in panels.

It may be set in the future but it actually feels oddly old fashioned. The story is not –yet – particularly deep though you suspect there are surprises and twists to come. For the moment it feels comfortably like all those films so far mentioned, plus Blade Runner and even Judge Dredd. We’ve seen the future and it’s… nostalgic. But why not? The future urban thriller is an underused genre these days.

The art is very appealing, not the gloomy sci fi noir you’d expect at all but clean, crisp, flowing and evocative of Moebius as times. The colours are bold too; even when certain scenes stick to a limited palette the panels remain vibrant.

A confident, intriguing start with three more issue to come.

Titan Announces New Dark Souls Comic Based On The Videogame Series

DarkSouls1_Cover D by Marco TuriniTitan Comics is to publish the Official Dark Souls comic – set in the world of the best-selling videogame series.

“I’m ‘dead’ excited to be working on this new series (see what I did, there),” says the series’ writer George Mann (Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor, Newbury And Hobbes Investigations). “Dark Souls has a rich, original universe that’s just begging to be explored in comics, and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to delve in and tell some new stories within it. I’ve been a fan of the games for some time, so it’s a real thrill to be able to contribute to the mythology of the Hollows and their world.”
