Asian Megastar Lu Han Releases Star Wars: The Force Awakens Pop Video "Inner Force"

Lu_han_inner_force

With The Force Awakens set to open in China – the second biggest movie market in the world – Disney’s official “Star Wars Ambassador” in the country, 25-year-old pop sensation Lu Han has released a music video for a track called “Inner Force” the film’s official Chinese theme song.

Disney is clearly hoping that Lu Han’s massive online fanbase (nearly 12 million followers on Weibo and he holds the Guinness World Record for most comments on a single post) will help the film break box office records in China the way it has been around the rest of the globe. Historically, though, China hasn’t been quite so gaga about the saga as Europe and North America so The Force Awakens may not be able to rely on the country to propel it past Avatar’s global record. (More here.)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in China on Saturday 9 January.

Mountaineers And Youthful Granny Beat Star Wars In The Far East

Increasingly, Disney’s decision to make South Korean boy band idol LuHan its ambassador for Star Wars in China (where the film doesn’t open until early January) looks like a canny one. And not just because of the potential for “LuHan Solo” type gags.

This morning the internet was awash with stories about how Star Wars: The Force Awakens had opened at number one in every territory where it has opened already… except two: South Korea and Vietnam.

So what’s beaten the Force in those countries? In both cases, home-made films. Seems there’s a considerable interest in “Hallyu” – the Korean pop culture wave – in the region at the moment that’s being reflected at the box office. And while the film that beat Disney’s blockbuster in Vietnam was technically Vietnamese, it was actually a remake of a South Korean film.

That film was Sweet 20, based on the 2104 South Korean film Miss Granny, a fantasy about a grandmother who wakes up as her 20 year-old self after a visit to a strange photo-studio (its production company CJ E&M seems to be franchising out the concept to various other countries for remakes too, including Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Germany). Amazingly the Vietnamese remake was in its second week of release when it managed to beat Star Wars.

In South Korea Star Wars: The Force Awakens was beaten by true-story-inspired mountaineering adventure drama The Himalayas which grossed $8.7 million as opposed to Force’s $7.9 million performance over the same period.

LuHan Star WarsDisney probably isn’t too worried about being bested in smallish territories such as South Korea and Vietnam, but China is a different matter. It’s now the second-biggest market for movies on the planet so Disney would obviously love to see Star Wars breaking records there too. That’s why it has turned to LuHan, whose old band, EXO, incidentally, has already released a single and video called “Lightsaber” with Disney’s full co-operation (see it here). LuHan’s single, called ‘The Inner Force” is imminent.

According to Disney has been made an honorary member of the “Jedi Order” in China. He’ll be appearing in local advertising spots and at promotional events, and popping up on TV and all over the internet to give The Force Awakens the local seal of approval.

LuHan doesn’t seem a particularly loyal ambassador, though. Brand LuHan is also adding its weight to Dreamwork’s Kung Fu Panda 3, which comes out in China just a couple weeks after The Force Awakens.

LuHan has nearly 12 million followers on Weibo and holds the Guinness World Record for most comments on a single Weibo post (which was about Manchester United). His post announcing his official connection with Star Wars — “I am honored to be the Star Wars ambassador to China, May the Force be with you!” — has been retweeted some 1.5 million times. So you can tell why Disney and Dreamworks weren’t going to come on too strong about demanding his exclusivity.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens REVIEW

Star_wars_the_force_awakens_finn_TIE

stars 4.5

Director: JJ Abrams
Starring: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, The Millennium Falcon
Certificate: 12A
Running time: 135 mins

NOTE: There is nothing plot-related in this review that wasn’t mentioned in official pre-publicity for the movie.

Let’s deal with the Bantha in the room straight off. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is almost more of a remake than a sequel. Or at the very least an original trilogy best moment megamix (125 story beats per movie) with some newcomers on lead vocals. George Lucas must be wondering where he went wrong. If he’d released The Force Awakens within a few years of Return Of The Jedi critics and fans would probably have moaned that he was foisting us off with the same-old, same old: a desert planet; working class character who becomes a hero of the resistance; a droid with a secret; the evil guys have a really big weapon in the shape of a planet… yadda yadda yadda. There’s loads more we could mention but won’t for fear of spoilers/ruining a good gag.

But as Jurassic World proved, wait long enough, cast cleverly and make things bigger and you really can get away with palming off a remake as a something new and different.

However, to dismiss The Force Awakens as a mere Xeroxing exercise misses the point. The plot may be familiar but the emotional story is very different beast indeed. What makes this film work, and buzz with life and energy in a way the stately but stiff prequels never did, are the characters and the relationships between them. Especially the truth of the relationships between them. While Padme and Anakin only fell in love because the script told them too and you never believed for a minute the ice queen would fall for the whining teen, you’re completely sold on new characters like Rey, Finn, Ren and Po within moments of meeting them. Star Wars: The Next Generation is in safe hand, with both Daisy Ridley and John Boyega bringing bags and charm and energy to the film.

Meanwhile the old guard are involved an epic generational and political soap that was always actually the heart of the original trilogy but which becomes a driving force here. And they handle it beautifully, ramping up the saga mythological feel. Han, Leia and Luke may be legends within their own universe, but they feel like the gods of Star Wars. Olympian gods, that is, complete with all the internal bickering and conflict. Harrison Ford looks like he’s never been away from the role but Carrie Fisher brings a whole new dimension of maturity to Leia: considering ho notorious Fisher is for sending up the franchise in interviews it’s a shock to see how damned seriously she plays the role. And Chewie steal scenes with the ease of a veteran thesp. Not bad for a character we can’t even understand.

It’s also the personal stories that contain the film’s biggest shocks, twists and dramatic gut punches, but try not to let anyone spoil you on that front. We’re certainly not going to.

Star_wars_the_force_awakens_daisy_BB-8

Abrams nails the tone perfectly. This feels like classic Star Wars while looking like a modern action movie. It allows the characters to be archetypes while remaining charismatic and human(oid). There are moments of nostalgia, fan-pleasing references and in-jokes (yes, Han does have a bad feeling about this) but they rarely feel indulgent. The action is cut fast andm Abrams uses his “combat correspondent” shakycam shtick but the big set pieces retain a visual poetry that belies a fan-boy’s love of all this hardware. The Millennium Falcon has never look more graceful in flight… even when it’s crashing.

Loving The Aiens

New aliens add a requisite touch of the exotic and odd. Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata is on sreen far more than lack of presence in the trailers indicated and she could be the film’s unexpected break-out character. BB-8 is even more appealing and funny than prepublicity suggested and C-3P0 is as irritating as ever but we wouldn’t want it any other way.

There’s casual banter and camaraderie throughout – and Han gets all the best lines – but it’s rarely goofy, tongue-in-cheek or slapstick, and on the rare occasions when it is, it works. The cringe factor is very, very low. Mostly it feels like  The Empire Strikes Back which is, let’s face it, what everybody wants to hear.

While there are no major missteps there are a couple of slight disappointments. There are no new iconic ships (there are new ships, they just don’t have much of a wow factor) and while there’s a great dramatic motivation behind the big lightsaber battle it’s not one of the franchise’s most memorable visually. Plus… not enough R2. And on a really picky note. C-3PO looks suspiciously plasticky for some reason, but it may be unsympathetic lighting.

Mostly, though, this is the comfortingly familiar Star Wars movie we’ve wanted since 1983; a hugely enjoyable balance of nostalgia and reinvention. Like a good Pixar movie, adults will willingly embrace even the parts aimed at kids, while kids will love… all of it. But now we’ve been eased back in with such skill and love, how about a plot next time that doesn’t involve a unfeasibly large weapon of mass destruction please?

••• Comic characters rarely age. Mr Fantastic actually looks like he’s grown younger over the years, though he may just be dyeing his hair these days. But what if they did age? That’s exactly what artist Eddie Liu has been pondering with these great portraits. Though quite why all his male DC characters have aged into distinguished-looking senior citizens while Wonder Woman has become Dot from EastEnders remains a mystery…

••• We thought Doctor Who had finished last Saturday, but there was a surprise extra episode on BBC One this Saturday night. It was very short and the Doctor had regenerated again into The Wanted’s Jay McGuinness but at least we know who’s playing the new companion now – Strictly Come Dancing’s Aliona Vilani.

••• Comic Book Resources has an occasional feature called “Shelf Porn” (we would explain the concept but the pictures speak for themselves) and the most recent entry was an absolute doozy. Sherry Konkus is a harpist and Punisher fan from Michigan, and she’s combined her two interests into a wonderfully bizarre display at her home. We just love the idea of Frank Castle sitting on a giant ball of wool…

••• A bunch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars took part in a Twitter Q&A to promote the film earlier this week. Nobody expected this would lead to a duet from Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac, but they spontaneously burst into a version of perennial favourite “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. Maybe they thought they were on Hoth.

••• After weeks of Star Wars-dominated Guardians Of The Gallery articles (is there a film coming out or something?) but this week there’s only one. A pair Hellcat muscle cars were pimped in the black-and-white uniform of a First Order Stormtrooper while a Viper ACR was repainted with a Kylo Ren-themed in a joint Star Wars/Fiat Chrysler publicity stunt. They toured the streets of LA over the weekend Fiat Chrysler encouraged Star Wars fans to post photos of themselves with the landspeeders… cars.
