Opening a Pandora's Box of Asian beauty with Beautibi

Untitled 1

Monthly subscription and curated themed boxes have become a worldwide sensation, ranging from food and drink, toys and beauty products; there are an endless supply of random and unique boxes available. But with Asian music and culture becoming a huge part of a niche market within the western world, it wasn’t long before people took note of the amazing beauty regimes and products from the far east.

Our friends at Beautibi in Los Angeles sent MCM Buzz one of their curated beauty boxes which claims to bring the best skincare and cosmetic products from Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Beautibi only ship to the US at the moment, but they are hoping to start shipping to Europe. To give our readers an insight of what is available I decided to take one for the MCM Buzz team and went completely beauty product crazy.

The first thing I should explain is that there is a difference between a subscription box and a curated themed box. With a subscription box you pay monthly for a box of goodies of which you won’t know what’s inside, and money will be taken from your bank account unless you unsubscribe. With a curated themed box you can choose products of a certain type (in this case make-up, daily beauty creams and face masks), but still receive a surprise of what will come. There are no recurring fees or contracts and you are not limited to just having the one box.

DSCN8751
I’m not the most savvy at beauty products, so I asked for a mixture of items. Beautibi graciously delivered a wide variety of goodies for me to try. I was pretty surprised at the delivery time considering it was coming from the US. I was informed of the box being sent out on 4 August and it arrived on my doorstep on 7 August – just a mere three days later! Not to mention my box was very well packed.

Untitled 8

My first impressions was mainly that of excitement after seeing the sturdiness and prettiness of the box and packaging within. Everything was very secure and extremely summery. You are greeted by a card which tells you all the information about the products within as well as a breakdown of how to use them and the R.R.P of the products. There are five main items and a small pouch with six sample pouches of different products (possibly future box items?).

After adding the product prices together it worked out that the box I was sent was worth roughly $60 (around £38), which is pretty considerable when you are only paying roughly $30 (around £19). Can’t say no to a 50% discount! So what did I get in the box and how did I feel about the products?

Beyond: Very Berry Cleansing Foam – Gooseberry scented (Korea). R.R.P $16.
A daily cleansing foam that creates a fine, lush lather with natural plant ingredients as a mild facial wash. Being rich in anthocyanin it provides energy and freshness to the skin. After using this on my face I realised how rough my skin actually was and how much make-up and grime gets left on your face even though you scrub it. It was really soft and beautifully scented inside the bottle, but I feel that the product did leave my skin slightly sticky and the beautiful scent was diminished when placed on the skin, which meant it smelt like every other ‘cheap’ soap. The packaging is simple, but instructions are written in Korean on the back of the package – luckily instructions are included on the welcome card.

Untitled 9

Beyond: CC Cream – Aqua, Cover, Glow (Korea). R.R.P $16.
Beyond Real Skin CC Cream has a moisturising cream texture which leaves the skin hydrated and protected from the harsh environmental pollutants. With an SPF25, PA++ rating, you can wear this cream as a make-up base and protect your skin from the sun. I have actually been looking for a new base make-up for my face since my favourite brand had discontinued the one I normally use and I had researched Korean BB and CC creams. When I first tested the product I was slightly disappointed because I have ridiculously pale skin and the pigment was too dark, but as I began to rub the cream into my skin I saw that it was adjusting to my skin tone. It left my skin soft, gave full coverage, and had great lasting power.

Untitled 11

PeriPera: Ice Jelly Sun SPF30, PA++ (Korean). R.R.P $12.
With an instant cooling sensation, this water based sunscreen gel is guaranteed to leave you feeling protected and cool. Without leaving any residue on the skin, you can go out and have some fun in the sun with confidence. Again the instructions for use on the back are in Korean, but using the information card you are advised to re-apply every 2-3 hours as needed. I haven’t a clue what the scent is, but it smelt good enough to be eaten – it smells super yummy! It also leaves the skin soft, it’s non-sticky, doesn’t leave any residue whatsoever and I was able to apply my make-up over the top with ease.

Untitled 10

Cezanne: Duo Eyeshadow – Peach & Brown (Japanese). R.R.P $10.
The eyeshadow palette comes in peach and brown and are great natural colours for everyday use, with the packaging being small enough to carry in a bag or purse. The pigmentation of the product is extremely high and with a simple glide of the applicator there is more than enough to cover the whole eyelid. The blending capability of the product is clearly where I was charmed as it created a perfect “smokey ” eye.

DSCN8773

Maskingdon: I Wish Series – “Made A Miracle” Facial Mask (Taiwan). R.R.P $6.
One of Taiwan’s leading companies in the facial mask business and boasted as the “Queen’s Facial Mask”. The “I Wish ” series has a natural water barrier lock and invisible protective film that helps to provide immediate moisturising, smooth lines, and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid and marine moisturising micro-membrane absorbs into the face muscles to activate firm and beautiful skin. Now I might not be a beauty buff, but I do know a good face mask when I see one, and this is one of the best I have used. It re-awakened and vitalised my face, leaving it full, moisturised and fresh looking. It comes in two parts; the mask and the aftercare moisturiser. After wearing the mask for 15-20 minutes I used up the rest of the excess product and dried it in to my face. Once it was dried I then applied the second part which helps to seal all of the goodness into the skin whilst leaving it plump and soft. One thing I must note about this product is its packaging – the lolita-esque Alice in Wonderland inspired package was so cute that I really didn’t want to ruin it.

Untitled 12

As an added bonus there was a small pouch of samples which are usually given to customers who purchase items within beauty stores in Asia. Included with my box was Tony Moly: Panda’s Dream – White Magic Cream (Korea), Tony Moly: Tomatox – Magic Massage Pack (Korea), Nature Republic: Super Origin – CC Cream (Korea), Nature Republic: California Aloe – Sun Block SPF50 (Korea), and two unknown brands from Taiwan that have Cleansing Water and Super Moist Gel inside them.

DSCN8760

In total the whole box was extremely affordable, completely random, yet contained products of high quality whilst keeping their cute yet professional style within their packaging. Although this box is currently only available within the US, I am hoping that readers will pop along to Beautibi’s website, Facebook and Pinterest and show some support or ask questions about the box. The more interest that is generated, the better the chance that Beautibi will deliver to Europe. Be sure to check out our gallery of images on the MCM Buzz Facebook page for a closer look at the products received in the Beautibi box.

A huge thank you to Jennifer at Beautibi for all of her help.

TOPP DOGG's Hansol shows his dance skills in "Scissorhands"

heder

The Japanese dance scene is one that is forever faithful to traditional genres and movement, but continues to elaborate and evolve its own language of dance. Recently the idea of fashion and dance are joined together as a collaborative in showing your own personality and rebelling against the constraints of the social norm.

Japanese models/dancers Aya and Bambi Sato are possibly the biggest thing to come from Japan’s dance scene in recent years, with their claim to fame being one of their workshops self-titled the “Bump Dub; the video showcases a style of dance all of its own but akin to that of Madonna’s “Vogue. Their fame from that singular video on YouTube had sparked a worldwide love for AyaBambi and had allowed the duo to be recognised by entertainers such as Madonna, Snakehips and Boa.

Dance is not the only thing that AyaBambi stand for. They are also recognised for their unique and beautifully composed fashion sense which revolves around the punk rock, goth and red carpet looks. Mixing leather and PVC they create a style not truly seen before: the girls managed to capture the hearts of designers such as Chalayan, NumeroTOKYO x Wacoal x Fashion Tsushin, and Lumine and performed some of their most memorable dance pieces for each brand.

efw

But what does AyaBambi have to do with the Korean boy group TOPP DOGG? Well as fans of TOPP DOGG will know that member Hansol is a very unique and talented performer, known for his dynamic tastes in fashion, music and art. He has revealed a few times through his personal Instagram and through the Official Topp Dogg Twitter that he is a fan of AyaBambi and would like to work with them one day. This has also been something a lot of fans of both parties have wanted to see for a long time as well. But it seems as though Hansol wanted to show his dedication as a fan through his own video.

Showing his skills and dedication to the style we have associated with AyaBambi, Hansol went full out and created his own homage to the pair. He managed to re-create a manly yet perfect representation of the fashion sense accustomed with the Japanese duo, with a full PVC leather suit and baggy knee-length shorts. Showing the artistic side to his personality Hansol created a background story and then performed his own choreography with an onslaught of feelings and precision.

With TOPP DOGG coming to Europe on their tour, there is one question that had arisen since the release of this video: will Hansol be performing this on stage? There is only one way to find out! Check out the breathtaking video below.

London Vs Seoul with a world champion dance battle at London Korean Festival

11813296_656779954457670_2359323905230194542_n

With the London Korean Festival being held in Trafalgar Square on Sunday August 9th, Korean culture fans have been celebrating the news of S.M. Entertainment’s girl group F(x) as well as the rock band Guckkasten performing at the free public event. It has also been announced that two world champion break dance crews from different corners of the globe are set to lay down their best dance moves in an epic dance battle.

London’s super group Soul Mavericks will go face to face against Seoul, Korea’s B-Boy world champions Jinjo Crew. Both crews are widely acclaimed and travel internationally to represent their country in hip-hop dance battles. South Korea has a relatively new and eternally expanding hip-hop fan base which is home to some of the top rated B-boy crews in the world. Where crews like the UK’s Diversity have won a major television talent show and become household names, Korea’s B-Boys are also very popular and have won MTV dance shows, talent shows and international battles. Both dance crews have faced each other once before at a championship in London, where Jinjo Crew triumphed, but the Soul Mavericks, who are marking their 10th anniversary as a group, are determined to win the battle this time around.

Soul Mavericks range in age from 12 to 40 years old and include both male and female members. Based in London, they have attracted dancers from all over the country, including one member from Wales. They also took part in the Beijing and London Olympic ceremonies as special guests. With Jinjo Crew based in Seoul they are flying to London especially for the dance battle and have been rehearsing a brand new routine that is set to entertain and surprise fans of the hip-hop B-boy movement. The crew include world champions B-Boy Hong10 and B-Boy Wing, winners of the Red Bull BC1 in 2006 in Brazil and 2008 in Paris, plus members Skim, Vero, FE, Octopus, Fleta, Giboon, Stony, Mold and Patrick Star.

Before the battle Jinjo Crew will be meeting young fans and teaching London school children some break dancing moves in a free dance lesson in south London on Friday 7th August. Both of the crews are part of  a wide range of acts in the form of musicians, dancers and top chefs who are taking part at the FREE one day London Korean FestivalThe event is organised by the Korean Cultural Centre UK, Korean Tourism Organisation, Korea Creative Content Agency and supported by the Mayor of London. Bringing together an exciting mix of modern and traditional Korean culture it will host a dynamic programme of dance from traditional to modern, delicious Korean food including live demonstrations by celebrity chef Judy Joo, plus e-sports games and live music.

And be sure to check back to MCM Buzz for a full review and coverage of the event. Below is a video of Jinjo Crew Vs Soul Mavericks at the UK B-boy World Championships in 2011.

Hello-I-Love-You-2

Asian generalisation and stereotyping – Hello, I Love You book review

Hello-I-Love-You-2

Warning, the following review does contain some spoilers.

When I first found out that a K-pop and Korean drama fan had written a book based in South Korea, my inner fangirl went wild. Finally, someone has written the love story most overseas fans could relate to, in terms of dreams of course. Hello, I Love You is marketed as a “Fresh new voice within the young adult market. Featuring an opposites attract love story and a Korean K-pop superstar to boot, this charming new title explores what it means to experience a first love and discover who you really are in the process.” So far it sounds like a perfect read for K-pop and Korean culture fans.

Author Katie M. Stout is from Atlanta, Georgia and works for an international charity where she is shipped all over the world on exciting escapades. She is a self proclaimed chai tea addict and states her love for Girls’ Generation, Teen Top and a lot of other big favourites within the K-pop scene, something I expected to see evidenced within the book.

We are introduced to the main character, Grace Wilde, the daughter of one of the biggest country producers in America, secret sister to Nathan Cross, the large scale A-list celeb who committed suicide through drink, drugs and rock & roll. She has a mother who she detests and a younger sister who she loves to bits. But we find her leaving all of her family and fame behind in Nashville and starting her own journey on her way to South Korea.

Straight away within the first few chapters I find myself clenching my teeth with subtle anger as I read stereotypical generalist remarks about the way Koreans address white people within their country. Grace hasn’t even left the airport and already she is declaring that every person who is not white is staring at her luscious long blonde locks, milky white skin and bright blue eyes like she is some kind of goddess. Stout’s cultural approach is not that of a person who has done her research – or if she has, it was minimal and from very old text book writing.

The character development doesn’t take too long, as even side characters get some form of development. It makes for a a nice change to actually know a little more about some of the people who make pivotal changes. We are introduced to Sophie, Grace’s roommate for her stay in a Korean school (which she blindly chose as it was the first school to pop into her search bar) and who becomes the mediator of the whole story by balancing the stereotypical Asian schoolgirl with the high pitched voice who is super talkative and super happy to have “A real American” as a future best friend. Grace creates a cultural divide straight away by feeling “judgement” of other foreigners within the school as she feels they are already in their own cliques. Thus she is introduced to Jason Bae, Sophie’s brother.

We are quickly thrown into the fact that Jason has two friends, Yoon Jae and Tae Ha, and that the three of them make up the boy band “The Eden”, who of course, are one of the biggest groups in K-pop! Through ups and downs throughout, some kind of relationship forms between Sophie and Tae Ha (their relationship had me happier than the main characters), and a friendship/relationship is formed between Grace and Jason. Though it’s difficult to understand how on earth Jason has feelings for Grace, as she is offish, rude and downright degrading towards the boy. Jason does retaliate, but has good reason to do so. Grace continuously uses the whole “Alice in Wonderland” syndrome with her princess complex and continues to entice Jason on, then throws him away through the goading of her own inner demons.

As the ending comes close with graduation at hand for the characters, the truth comes out as to why Grace behaves the way she does. The stress of pressure tears away at Jason and suddenly we are left in a position where the story can go two ways. Does our main girl go home to a life she dislikes with every fibre of her body, or does she stay and make her own dreams come true? The last few chapters really felt like a blur. With the last two in particular, more could have been done to flesh out one of the most important moments the reader had been waiting for, yet it ended like a soggy paper towel on a plate – totally unappealing and disappointing.

As a book that was supposedly written by a K-pop and Korean drama fan, with the promise of these influences, I was left completely deflated. Stout states in her book, on her social media and on her website that she has a deep interest in the culture and music scene within Korea. However, there is no attempt to show that understanding of what it takes to be a K-pop idol, the understanding of cultural differences, or any attempt to paint South Korea, its people, its culture, or its music scene in any good light. Instead we have angst within a character that should have learnt the differences in what was right or wrong within the first month of her staying at a Korean school dormitory.

If you have no care about differences in culture, the music scene, or promoting a good image, then what you have is a good teenage love story. It hits the right amount of notes for teenage angst with enough pushing and pulling of fictional emotions which today’s generation of kids could possibly level with. If you want a short enough book to travel with to pass the time, then this is small enough in pages and in size. For a hardback book it is really nicely presented. I can fully see what Stout was going for, but without some key points of research, a little more understanding, or even without talking to a vast amount of fans of the K-pop world, what was created was something a little less than par.

“Hello, I Love You” is available from all good bookstores worldwide. If you have read the book, please feel free to post a comment below with what you thought about it.

Topp Dogg answer fan questions and reveal their cover of "Love Me Like You Do"

tumblr_static_topp-dogg-3-720x450

With Topp Dogg’s European showcase tour just around the corner fans are getting anxious as to what they can expect from the group at the concerts in Milan, London and Paris. By using their official YouTube channel, Jazzy Group (the team hosting the European Tour) have asked Topp Dogg to answer questions sent in by fans.

The first video shows B-Joo asking questions to Sangdo about fans visiting Korea, food, and places to visit. Though it seems B-Joo feels Sangdo is being too negative. The boys really show their caring yet comedic side to these interview questions.

Next up B-Joo decides to bother Hansol as he sits in the office quietly. In this video it seems Hansol finds it the best moment to promote how much he loves his fans, and to talk about his love for alternative dance and famous dance groups in Japan. Though things get aggressive when the brotherly love between the two are left in shatters because of B-Joo.

It seems B-Joo has really taken his MC position within these videos pretty seriously, so this time barges into a practice room with members Nakta and Jenissi. Again the subject of food is bought up and Nakta explains his love for pasta and how he can’t wait to try it when on tour. With doe eyes, Jenissi prepares himself to answer a serious question, which ends on a slightly “perverted” note about the colour of his underwear.

For Xero’s interview, it seems as if he was genuinely doing work when B-Joo waltzes in and starts his attack of questions about sleeping habits where they talk about Kidoh – But Xero gets his own back by declaring the worst sleeper in his current dorm is in fact B-Joo. Revenge is so sweet!

Taking things in a new direction, B-Joo makes Hansol join him in annoying Kidoh as he works, though they make a point of picking on him about his hair, calling him “mum”. In this segment Kidoh talks about his deep love for Poland, though things get serious when he starts looking for visa requirements.

We don’t know if there are more videos to come with the members answering fan questions, rest assured that MCM Buzz will update you on anything new. In the meantime, during the run up to the concerts, Jazzy Group revealed that Topp Dogg were working on a special project to commemorate their European tour. This project turned out to be the members performing their own cover version of Ellie Goulding’sLove Me Like You Do“. The setting for the video is among statues of the famous landmarks of each of the representative countries on their European showcase tour, giving the video a personal touch for European fans. Be sure to check out the video below.

Something which is shown throughout all of these videos is the excitement the members have for meeting their overseas fans. In return fans are showing their excitement of welcoming Topp Dogg to their country by arranging a special GoFundMe page to create fan items and provide gifts to the members. Plus, Jazzy Group are adding merchandise for the tour available to pre-order on the Jazzy Group Facebook page. There are still some tickets available for each of the venues which you can purchase from The Troxy (London), TicketOne (Milan) and TicketMaster (Paris). Or you can try your luck by entering Topp Dogg’s official competition to win yourself a ticket to their show.

Be sure to show some support for the movement of Korean music within Europe, and of course show your support for the members of Topp Dogg.
