J.K. Rowling Confirms Status Of Ilvermorny Houses, Hufflepuff’s Awesomeness

fantastic creatures
JK Rowling is about to make a major return to the spotlight. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been getting seriously good advanced word and tickets are already starting to approach Hamilton levels of demand. Likewise, Fantastic Creatures and Where To Find Them is building momentum nicely and with it, Rowling is expanding the American side of Harry’s world. It’s not all been plain sailing by any means but the short story she’s currently serializing on Pottermore recently is doing some really fun stuff. And also causing some good-natured fan speculation.

As EW reports, Rowling was asked if there was any similarity between Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Gryffindor and their US counterparts Thunderbird, Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, and Wampus. Specifically, she was asked if Wampus was the equivalent to Hufflepuff. Now, as you may know Hufflepuff has a certain reputation as being the House that doesn’t do very much. Besides as Annie from Being Human put it;

‘I’ve always thought in Hufflepuff they just spend the day making stuff with safety scissors and glitter.’

Rowling’s reply was unequivocal:

“There is no equivalence between Hogwarts and Ilvermorny houses…but don’t diss Hufflepuff!

Mic (Well, wand in this instance) DROPPED. Hufflepuff for the win.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child opens on July 30th. Fantastic Creatures And Where To Find Them opens on November 18th

While we wait to find out we’re getting a little bit freaked by the Black Widow can. Can’t see many arachnophobes drinking out of that one.

The Friends of English Magic: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell gets off to a spell-binding start

pwrzefzckgioacpvb8ej

Just in time to give you a flavour of what to expect at their MCM London Comic Con panel, the stars of BBC One’s magical new drama Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell last night appeared on our TV screens for the show’s spell-binding first episode.

Based on Susanna Clarke’s hugely popular novel, the seven-part series is set in a version of 18th century England where magic has been suppressed for 300 years. In Episode One, “The Friends of English Magic”, a young man named Segundus travels to York to meet a group of self-professed magicians, only to discover that they consider the practice of magic “ungentlemanly”, and study the art only in theory. In seeking out spell books, however, Segundus eventually encounters the reclusive Mr Norrell, the country’s last true magician, who is destined to reinstate practical magic as a legitimate pursuit.

With the help of Norrell’s assistant, Childermass, Segundus manages to coax the magician out of hiding and down to London to meet with politicians, where he offers up his talents to aid British soldiers in the Napoleonic wars. But when War Secretary Sir Walter Pole refuses his services, Norrell decides to prove himself by raising a young woman from the dead, resulting in a disturbing encounter with a sinister magical being. Meanwhile, a half-mad street magician claiming to be a servant of the mysterious Raven King predicts dark and terrible things to come, both for Norrell, and his fellow magician-to-be, Jonathan Strange.

“The Friends of English Magic” is a visual treat, mixing the historical with the fantastic in stunning style: think Harry Potter meets Jane Austen and you’re more or less there. Despite its 60-minute length, it’s pacy and engaging, with winning characters and a strong through-narrative.

The series also boasts an exciting cast, with Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, The World’s End, Little Dorrit) and Enzo Cilenti (Wolf Hall, Spooks, Guardians of the Galaxy) totally enthralling as the proud and bookish Mr Norrell and his pushy assistant Childermass, while Edward Hogg (Indian Summers, Jupiter Ascending, The Borgias) is perfect as the nervous and naively hopeful Segundus. Vincent Franklin follows up his excellent performances in Cucumber and The Thick of It by taking on the similarly deluded character Drawlight, and Paul Kaye (Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Dracula Untold) is suitably insane as the creepy, prophesying street magician Vinculus. The show also stars Bertie Carvel (who has appeared in Sherlock, Primeval and Doctor Who, as well as lending his voice to the Star Wars – The Old Republic games) in the second of the title roles, supported by the ever-fabulous Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders, Wuthering Heights, Edge of Tomorrow) as his possible future fiancée, Arabella. Sam West (Van Helsing, Mr Selfridge, The Hollow Crown) also puts in a brief appearance as the sceptical Sir Walter Pole, along with Ariyon Bakare (Jupiter Ascending, Dancing on the Edge, The Dark Knight) as his servant, Steven Black.

We’re excited to see where the series goes next, but even more excited at the chance to hear from actors Bertie Carvel and Paul Kaye, along with scriptwriter Peter Harness (Doctor Who, Wallander, Is Anybody There?), director Toby Haynes (Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Musketeers, Being Human) and producer Nick Hirschkorn (Skellig, Five Children and It), at this month’s MCM London Comic Con, where they’ll be participating in a panel discussion at 4pm on Saturday 23rd May.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is produced by Cuba Pictures for BBC One and BBC America, in association with Feel Films, Far Moor and Bell Media’s Space. It was part funded with investment from Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund, and is distributed by Endemol Worldwide. To make sure you don’t miss the chance to keep ahead of the game and get an exclusive insight into this brilliant new show, make sure you book your tickets from the MCM Comic Con website. You can also catch up on the first episode on BBC iPlayer here, or watch the trailer below.

Book review: Take Back The Skies by Lucy Saxon

Capture

Launching an ambitious series of books as a first-time writer is never easy, especially in today’s world where the written word spreads around quicker than ever. You only have to look at the success of something like Fifty Shades Of Grey which was developed from Twilight fan fiction to see how times have changed in the world of literature. Lucy Saxon certainly hasn’t taken the easy route with her first publication from Bloomsbury, introducing us to the islands of Tellus in Take Back The Skies.

Saxon’s debut novel focuses on Catherine ‘Cat’ Hunter, whose father holds a senior position in the government, as she seeks to free herself from the pressures of familial responsibilities and an arranged marriage. Hunter has ambitions beyond the government that rules over her land, and certainly isn’t loyal to the cause, instead disagreeing with many of the liberties those in power take with the inhabitants of the island of Anglya and beyond. These include the Collections, where children are torn from their families. Luckily for Cat, she is exempt, but she has her own problems to deal with.

It’s easy to draw parallels with The Hunger Games in the best way possible – a headstrong lead character not dependent on gender, an uprising against power, and strong character relationships you invest in. Cat and Katniss certainly share numerous character traits but their upbringings couldn’t be more different, and Take Back The Skies takes a different approach to what may seem like a familiar idea. Cat herself isn’t as easy to like at times, with a stubbornness that can border on irritating, but Saxon manages to maintain a fair balance when it comes to Cat’s positives and negatives. It’s no surprise she has kinks to iron out, having been under the rule of her father for quite some time, and choosing to throw herself into the unknown with a big wide world out there full of unfamiliar faces and danger round every corner. There’s an understandable naivety and immaturity about Cat from time to time, but Take Back The Skies is not only about the literal journey she takes but the emotional one she goes on also.

The journey takes place on a skyship – Stormdancer – on which Cat stows away, pretending to be a boy. It’s an interesting question to address in terms of the treatment of someone based on their gender, and proves that it doesn’t matter what Cat is, she’s a headstrong and capable character and a good role model for anyone reading. Alongside her, the ‘hero’ Fox is almost a male version of Cat, just as tenacious and adventurous, but with a softer side hidden beneath. Everyone on board forms a dysfunctional family of sorts, but one that Cat feels more at home in than she ever does with her power obsessed father. Take Back The Skies isn’t about running away from your problems however, but more about finding your own path and, eventually, a way to solve those issues. Cat isn’t the type to simply put her own feelings first and has ambitions beyond what she wants, and it’s that determination and grit that readers will truly get behind.

Capture

There’s a lot of creativity and visual depth that you would expect from someone of Saxon’s background, having been heavily involved in cosplay for numerous years and being a self-confessed geek. The steampunk influences are clear here, and you can really imagine fans getting involved by cosplaying their own Take Back The Skies costumes. The world of Tellus is a mysterious one that lends itself to mystery and intrigue, and one that encourages the reader to use their imagination. Relationships here may be grounded in reality, but we are invited to imagine a whole new realm around them, and that’s part of the fun about Saxon’s writing. While the descriptions are vivid, there’s just enough of a gap left to fill in your own ideas.

Is Take Back The Skies perfect? No, and there’s certainly room for improvement here in the writing, but as Saxon’s debut, it’s an impressive and ambitious effort. It’s hard not to compare to others like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, ones that have taken the world by storm, but Take Back The Skies has the same spirit about it – one of a world of endless possibilities, where you can imagine each and every scene up on the big screen one day. Lucy Saxon should be very proud of her creation, as she sucks the reader in and toys with their emotions like the best writers out there. Most importantly, this is a world created that readers will want to return to and see what happens next. When you reach the final word of a book and feel desperate for the follow-up, you know you’ve read something good. Take Back The Skies is a strong opening chapter to what will hopefully be a successful series for many years to come.

Take Back The Skies is out 5th June in Hardcover, paperback and eBook formats from all good retailers.

Quartet by Dustin Hoffman UK cinemas on 1 January 2013 470

Quartet by Dustin Hoffman hits UK cinemas on 1 January 2013

Dustin Hoffman’s Quartet arrives in the UK in January 2013.

We know that Dustin Hoffman fella can act but it seems he’s been busy behind the cameras as well.

If you’re wondering whether his skills as a director are as good as his skills at pretending, it won’t be long before we get to find out. Hoffman’s directorial debut Quartet opens in UK cinemas on 1 January 2013.

He’s not the only one on the project with a shiny bald statue, as Oscar winner Sir Ronald Harwood (The Pianist) has written the screenplay. Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) – who has been nominated six times and has won two Oscars – also plays the female lead.

Tom Courtenay (The Dresser, Doctor Zhivago), Billy Connolly (Mrs. Brown), Pauline Collins (Shirley Valentine), Sheridan Smith (Hysteria, Gavin & Stacey) and Michael Gambon (the Harry Potter series) also star.

The plot:

Lifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtenay), together with former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home.

But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet, moves into the home to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel.

As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on.

Quartet will be released in UK cinemas nationwide on 1 January, 2013 and in US cinemas on 28 December, 2012.
