Ghibli’s From Up On Poppy Hill Opens in the UK and Ireland on 2 August

Studio Ghibli’s From Up On Poppy Hill will open in the UK and Ireland on 2 August, with both English subtitled and dubbed showings. The film follows a group of Yokohama teens involved in a student movement to prevent the demolition of an old club house in preparation for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Goro Miyazaki directed the film, while Hayao Miyazaki, Goro’s father and Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, wrote the script.

The English dub features Sarah Bolger, Anton Yelchin, Gillian Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Beau Bridges, Christina Hendricks, Ron Howard, Chris Noth and Aubrey Plaza.

Studio Canal will be releasing the film on DVD and Blu-ray on 23 September.

Anime Screening in Glasgow on 10 February Includes Surprise Film

As part of the Glasgow Youth Film Festival, The Glasgow Film Theatre will be screening three anime films on 10 February

Wolf-children-web_film_detailMamoru Hosoda’s The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki will be the first showing at 12.45 p.m; second up is Studio Ghibli’s From Up On Poppy Hill at 3 p.m. Both films are in Japanese with English subtitles. The third film, however, is a surprise and has not yet been named; though it has been listed as “an exciting anime premiere”. This film will be preceded by a cosplay competition judged by a celebrity panel, with prizes for the best dressed. This joint cosplay and film showing event will begin at 5 p.m.

Studio Ghibli’s From Up On Poppy Hill English Trailer

When it rains, it pours; Studio Ghibli have not been stingy on us here in the west. With Ni No Kuni‘s release yesterday, an English-dubbed trailer of Ghibli latest cinematic excursion From Up On Poppy Hill has been released today. 

The story of the film follows a group of Yokohama teens involved in a student movement to prevent the demolition of an old club house in preparation for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

From Up On Poppy Hill was directed by Goro Miyazaki, while Hayao Miyazaki, Goro’s father and Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, scripted the film.

Hayao Miyazaki, Keiko Niwa and Karey Kirkpatrick were all nominated for their achievement in writing for an animated feature at the 40th Annual Annie Awards, but they lost out to Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph. The film also lost out on Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

Live-Action Library Wars Film Trailer Released

A live-action adaptation of Hiro Arikawa’s Library Wars light novels is being made; directed by Shinsuke Sato (Gantz films, The Princess Blade, Oblivion Island), the film stars Junichi Okada (From Up on Poppy Hill, Tales from Earthsea), Nana Eikura (The Floating Castle) and Chiaki Kuriyama (Battle Royale, Kill Bill). The film will be released in Japan on 27 April 2013.

Library Wars is set in 2019 when a law on the censoring books and media is enforced; to stop armed forces destroying many literary works The Library Force is created, providing military protection for libraries. Iku Kasahara (Eikura) joins The Library Force in order to fight for the cause.

Studio Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill is up for an Annie Award

The nominations for the 40th Annual Annie Awards have been announced by The International Animated Film Society (ASIFA) in Hollywood. Hayao Miyazaki, Keiko Niwa and Karey Kirkpatrick have all been nominated for the Writing in an Animated Feature Production category for their work on Goro Miyazaki’s From Up on Poppy Hill. Karey Kirkpatrick was responsible for the English dub script.

From Up on Poppy Hill has been nominated alongside the writing staff of ParaNorman, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! (In America: The Pirates! Band of Misfits), Frankenweenie, Brave and Wreck-It Ralph.

The film has already been submitted for an Oscar nomination and has also submitted to be considered for the Best Animated Feature category of the Golden Globes Awards.

Latest News on Studio Ghibli’s Next Film “From Up On Poppy Hill”

From Up On Poppy Hill, directed by Goro Miyazaki, has been adapted from the manga Kokuriko-Zaka Kara by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama. It follows a group of Yokohama teens involved in a student movement to prevent the demolition of an old club house in preparation for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Hayao Miyazaki, Goro’s father and Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, scripted the film.

Already having been released in Japan, the film is set for release in America next spring. English dub cast members have recently been announced by Ghibli; Gillian Anderson (Princess Mononoke, X-Files), Chris North (Law and Order), Sarah Bolger (BioShock 2, The Spiderwick Chronicles) and Ron Howard (American Graffiti) will be voicing characters in the Ghibli film, though it is unclean which characters they will be playing.

Academy Award-winning sound designer and director Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Toy Story) is directing the English dub and Studio Ghibli will be overseeing the dub as producer. The film has qualified for Oscar consideration and the company GKids plan to release the film on Blu-ray and DVD after its cinema release.
