Boys Republic “Get Down” with new album [BR:evolution]

12891758_902430446540877_7056418631208981939_o

We previously covered the K-pop boy group Boys Republic during their European tour where they stopped in London to see their UK fans, and even got a little personal when we had the chance to interview them before their tour. Off the record, we asked when their next release would be, and they told us to wait patiently as they were working hard for a new concept and comeback – with this new release, it looks like it was worth the wait!

Boys Republic are known for their mellow romantic releases such as “Hello“, the fun and cutesy K-pop classic releases such as “Dress Up” and “L.I.U“, as well as breaking into the dance scene with “Video Game” and “Party Rock“. But as times change, so does their style. “You Are Special” brought out the rebel within the members, whereas sexy gentleman chic was announced with their release of “The Real One“. But nowadays it seems that K-pop fans want more powerful and dominating music videos, with catchy tunes and lots of artistic eye candy. With Boys Republic and Universal Music being on the ball with pleasing their fans, they have heard your calls and gone for something completely different than what many would have suspected.

[BR:evolution] is the new album, which in its own title is about the evolution of Boys Republic. Released on 30 March, the album consists of four songs and one instrumental of the main title, boasting a mix of dance, pop and a ballad. Initially from the teaser photos it was unclear what to expect, with the black leatherette look, the images were theatrical yet slightly on the apocalyptic side. One of the key things to note was how different each of the members looked; their boyish charms making way for strong, handsome looking men.

Each member released a teaser video along with a teaser image. They started with Minsu who now donned bright white blonde hair whilst wearing a mixture of jumpsuits and leather coats. The sound clip sounded like part of the chorus (something entertainment companies do to tease their fans) and the theme certainly looked post-apocalyptic (and can we just point out how on point Minsu’s make up is). Second to make an appearance was SungJun and the apparent post-apocalyptic theme is more than that, you see SungJun spray silver paint onto his teeth and face which is representative of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. The leader of the group OneJunn brings the bad boy vibes and gives fans the idea of scale to the set of the video. Being the youngest, SuWoong brings a new element of manliness and growth to the group and through the small clips presented you get a feeling that this is his transitional stage. Lastly we have SunWoo,who looks like a total boss and is full of charisma.

The teasers alone were enough to stir up excitement for their album, which starts with their single release “Get Down”, which is powerful and upbeat. This is nothing compared to their previous works and feels like listening to a completely new group. The combination of soft and strong vocals with the balance of heavy drums and base work really gives the song a catchy and pleasing sound. It’s also a very fast growing favourite with or without the music video! “Eyes On Me” sticks with the powerful backing music, but it’s bought down with more powerful lyrics, yet not so powerful with the vocals. There is a lot of playing with pitches of the vocals and the music through this song, nonetheless it makes a point and represents the members well.

“VIP” has a slightly retro sound that I usually associate with Boys Republic’s songs. It sounds like old school K-pop, but has a natural mix with the modern day sounds that the group releases. It has the usual vocal, chorus, rap ratio that creates a catchy and upbeat song. Although this isn’t as powerful and growth-worthy as the previous songs, the feeling is that this is a track to show where they have come from, which fits well with the concept of the album. Finally we have a song that has completely blown me away in terms of not only showing growth, but the strength of the album. “A Song For You” is a solo song performed by OneJunn, and although we all know that K-pop idols are incredibly talented, this is the first time we have truly heard the leader of the group showcase his vocals to (what I feel is) his full capacity. As ballads go, this has all the elements of a great song – soft piano, soft vocals and beautiful heart touching lyrics. But in terms of a Boys Republic ballad, this is something completely new (exactly like “Get Down”). There is a sense of evolution and growth just within this song that is totally enthralling and is one that ends the album on a beautiful note.

In conclusion, there is a feeling that this is one of those albums that needs to be purchased as a physical copy, not just digital. And if the “Physical Album Teaser” is anything to go by, you will be getting a photo book worth keeping and a photo-card for your collection as well!

Boys Republic put on a show to remember in London

DSC_0255

On Saturday 4th July 2015, K-pop boy group Boys Republic greeted UK fans at the O2 Islington Academy with their first European tour. The concert couldn’t have been on a better day. It was one of the hottest days in the UK and for the first time, London did not greet K-pop idols with rain.

The venue itself was in the heart of Angel, Islington. The hall itself was ideal for an event like this and allowed the concert to feel more personal. There was merchandise available at the back of the hall where staff were laughing and joking with fans, along with security (which was nice to see as most of the time they can be slightly on edge).

DSC_0174

The hall was not as full of fans as I had hoped for, which was sad in one way as these boys deserved so much more than what was given (though I’ve got to hand it to the fans that turned out for the concert, they gave it their best – dancing, screaming, and singing).

When the lights went down, and the music began, the crowd were pumped and went insane, screaming and singing. The boys stepped out wearing crisp suits looking ready to perform to their best ability, singing a mixture of songs from their own releases, as well as a few special ones along the way.

Sunwoo had his solo moment by sitting on a high stool centre stage and taking the hype down a notch by singing his own rendition of Robbie WilliamsAngels“. The fans reacted by singing along with him and swaying their hands from side to side. The youngest member Suwoong took Sunwoo’s place on the stage and sang to his highest to Frank Sinatra’sFly Me To The Moon“, which he stated was one of his favourite songs to sing. I have to hand it to the guy, his voice was out of this world; I was thoroughly shocked at how well he performed this song, his vocals were spot on!

Following on from the youngest, the oldest and leader of the group Wonjun took to the stage after playfully pushing Suwoong off, and set up a piano. The crowd were serenaded to a compilation of British and Korean songs, once again proving that these guys have amazing vocals that need to be heard! Minsu and Sungjoon then took to the stage a little later with their own R&B/hip-hop stage, performing their fusion of Korean rapping of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk“, which was a huge hit with the crowds. There was a particular crowd of fans at the back who were truly enjoying themselves and dancing like there was no tomorrow, which caught the attention of the members. It was really nice to see fans enjoying themselves.

Choi Soo Min is a firm favourite of MCM Buzz, so it was a delight to hear that he was going to be performing with Boys Republic, especially after his last performance with Jung Min was cancelled. As if on command, Soo Min took to the stage and proved why he is a musical genius. People were enthralled by his skills on the keyboard and were even dancing along to the classical music he was playing. It was really nice to see a different genre of music being enjoyed by the crowd.

At one point during the concert the members invited a few of their fans on stage to play a game. It was a really heart warming moment to see the natural interaction with fans. As time went on there was a special video created, written, directed and performed by the members of Boys Republic, showing their heartfelt thanks to their fans. It was a nice edition and allowed the boys to change into their new outfits. The next segment was a dance performance. Full of acrobatic and strenuous movements, these boys slayed the dance floor.

Arriving at the event, nothing could have prepared me for what I was going to watch. I left feeling hyped and ready to party even longer. I found a new level of respect for the boys and their hard work, and even now I feel I could quite easily pop on to YouTube and watch their videos and performances. I went in unaware and came out a fan – that in itself is a feat!

Big companies look at these smaller concerts to see if it’s worth their time and money to come to London. Even if you’re not a fan of the group, it’s guaranteed that if you go with your friends to an event like this, you will end up leaving like you have attended a great party. At the same time you are supporting the growth of K-pop in Europe, and showing that there is a demand for more K-pop artists in the UK.

A big thank you to  B7klan and Torpedo Productions, Charlotte Naudin, Boys Republic, Choi Soo Min and the staff at O2 Islington Academy for a thoroughly great night out. If you have a chance to see Boys Republic live, I wholeheartedly recommend you don’t miss out, as it was a fantastic performance. Exclusive Interview: Boys Republic get personal before their Royal Tour

Boys Republic_Real Talk

Most of our dedicated K-pop readers will have seen the news that the K-pop boy group Boys Republic are coming to London Islington Academy on July 4th as part of their “Royal Tour“. Tickets are already on sale so be sure to grab yours as soon as possible.

Members Wonjun, Sunwoo, Minsu, Sungjun, and Suwoong have already sent their greetings to their European fans and are really excited to see everyone. So whilst they were still hyped up about their upcoming tour, we managed to grab a small interview with all of the members to see what makes Boys Republic a Korean boy group to watch.

– — – — – — – — –

You debuted in 2013 with “Party Rock” which bought a new flare to the K-pop world. Did you ever think you would get as far as you have today when you first started out?

We really appreciate all the fans who have supported us over time. It is all about them as to why we are here now.

What are Boys Republic’s favourite video games? Are there any games that inspired your music video?

We love to play GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and FIFA.

Your music is being listened to worldwide, what do you feel sets you apart from other artists?

We are not afraid of trying different types of music.

The dance choreography to your music can be very hard. Who out of the group is the best dancer?

Sungjun and Minsu easily master the choreography, especially Minsu as he learns choreography very fast. For new songs we practice more than two months before we start TV promotions.

Who is it that inspires you all? Is there anyone (from around the world) that inspires you to do what you do?

Always The Beatles, Shinhwa, and G.O.D.

Untitled 4

I recently watched one of your videos where the members dressed up in funny costumes. Just watching I felt embarrassed for you all, but what was your most embarrassing moment performing?

During one of our performances there was confetti and one piece went into one member’s mouth during the performance. It didn’t get caught on camera and fans in front saw it and laughed at them.

Fanservice is a big deal, especially for international fans. You had done a Lazer Tag fan meeting once. What other activities would you like to do with your fans in the future?

We’d like to do a charity event with Royal family.

Your last group release was “The Real One” in November 2014 with a modern Vs classic concept. Do you have any plans to release a new album or song for 2015?

Of course! We can’t tell you the details, but it will be awesome!
(E/N: Boys Republic have just released their new single and music video “Hello” which you can see below!)

“Rookie King: Boys Republic” was a much loved TV show for fans worldwide, allowing a bridge between the idols and their fans. How would you like to interact with your fans in the future?

We want to hold a small concert with fans.

You are travelling around Europe on your tour soon, but have any of you previously visited any of the countries you are going to?

It is our first time to go to Europe and we would love to go to all countries, but Paris, France should be a must!

And lastly, do you have anything to say to your UK fans, and readers of MCM Buzz?

We hope you will keep supporting us please!

K-pop intro to Boys Republic + European Tour Greeting

Boys_Republic_Mini_Fan_Meet_2014

As K-pop fans might have heard, rookie K-pop boy group Boys Republic will be touring Europe on their “The Royal Tour” from 3rd – 12th July 2015. Stopping off in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Koln, Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, and Wien. Tickets are already on sale and are selling like hot cakes, so be sure to act fast as only the last few are left!

Under Universal Music, members Wonjun, Sunwoo, Minsu, Sungjoon, and Suwoong spent two long years vigorously training in Dance, Music, Vocals, Culture, and Language, coming together as Boys Republic in June 2013.

Their first release was Party Rock which set the stage for a very successful future and proved that although they are a boy group amongst many in Korea, they were completely unique in terms of musical style and promotional activities for their era. The song peaked at #1 in the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. Whilst debuting the members also became part of the much loved show Rookie King: Boys Republic which showed the daily life of the group in a diary form, whilst getting the members to do quests.

In October 2013 the group made their second appearance in the charts with the release of You Are Special. The song features some heavy vocals and club music, which mellows at the chorus. The month also saw members voted and invited to close the U.O.X music festival in Malaysia. They also became the ambassadors alongside K-pop boy group VIXX for the charity campaign Eye Camp Expedition, joining volunteers in Vietnam to help the visually impaired.

Video Game was released early in 2014 with the caption “Childish boys growing up to be superheroes.” The music style was unique, along with the beautifully choreographed video, which allowed a connection between the K-pop world and the electronic side of Korea that the country is known for (E-sport MMORPG’s such as League Of Legends, Starcraft and Dota are a huge part of Korea). August 2014 saw them take part in MTV’s World Stage Live In Malaysia, performing in front of 15,000 people.

In November 2014, the music video for their last track, The Real One, had the concept of Modern Vs Classic, with the Victorian era portraying elegance, whilst the modern day suits conveyed sophistication. Keeping in trend yet tipping their hat to a retro style, Boys Republic brought a fresh new stance to music once again, going off in a completely new direction from the hip-hop scene that was sweeping Korea. The month also saw the group’s Japanese promotions start, as they performed in front of 1,000 enthusiastic fans at Tower Records Shibuya store.

So there you have it, a brief introduction to the rookie K-pop boy group Boys Republic. It is pretty exciting to have another K-pop group come to Europe, let alone the UK – so please be sure to show your full support.

Check out Boys Republic’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Don’t forget to pop along to B7klan‘s Facebook, Twitter and website for up to date news and to buy your tickets. Also, you can view Boys Republic’s greeting video to European fans below.
