the GazettE to release back catalogue in physical and digital formats across Europe

the GazettE

London’s JPU Records will be releasing the GazettE’s first three major-label albums, NIL, Stacked Rubbish and Dim, in physical and digital formats in Europe. This comes ahead of the release of the J-rock quintet’s eighth album DOGMA.

the GazettE - Nil  the GazettE - Stacked Rubbish  the GazettE - Dim

Nil (Nameless Liberty Underground) was released in 2006 and reached number four in the Oricon Weekly Album Chart. The year also saw the band embark on a Japanese tour that culminated at Nippon Budokan. Nil will be available from 10 July in the UK and soon after in the rest of Europe.

Follow up album Stacked Rubbish gave the GazettE their highest chart position to date, reaching number three in Japan’s album chart in 2007. The album saw the band experimenting with elements of R&B, jazz and blues, combined with their already heavy and aggressive sound. Featuring the tracks Filth in the Beauty and Regret, Stacked Rubbish will be available from 14 August, with several tracks already available to buy from iTunes.

2009 saw the GazettE release their fourth album, Dim. Leading up to its release, the band held a secret show at Shinjuku Station Square, the world’s busiest transport hub, but it had to be shut down when several thousand fans happened to turn up. DIM includes the track Leech, the band’s first single to reach number two in the charts. The album will also be released on 14 August, with several tracks available now from iTunes.

The CD editions of the albums include the original photo and lyric booklets, as well as an all-new booklet containing new images and the lyrics translated into English and Romaji.

You can pre-order from JPU Records by clicking here.

Exclusive Interview With Korean Indie Hybrid Punk Rockers PATiENTS

Patients at Liverpool Sound City 1

The Korean music industry is forever growing in size and expanding into new genres. While K-pop and hip-hop still dominate the Korean music scene, K-indie is gaining international fame, with many Korean punk and rock stars now becoming as well-loved as mainstream performers. I was lucky enough to get the chance to interview PATiENTS when they performed in the UK during a mini tour in May, and got to know the band a little bit better whilst exploring a whole new world within the K-indie scene.

– — – — – — – — – — –

Hi guys, could you please introduce yourselves?

Hi there,  I’m Sumin Jo and I play bass and handle lead vocals in PATiENTS. Hyuckjang Kwon is the keyboardist and Jaehyuk Lee is our drummer. PATiENTS is based in Seoul, Korea and we play a style of music we like to call “hybrid punk”. In April, we released our second full-length album, called “18.” And last month we did a UK tour, playing concerts in London and at Liverpool Sound City.

This wasn’t your first time playing in the UK: is there anything that was particularly memorable for you from your previous visit?

Our 2014 UK tour went great. We got to play for some great crowds in London, Liverpool Sound City and at WTFest in Southampton, we met some really cool bands, and made some new friends. Things went even better during our shows this past May. It was great to catch up with some of the friends we met in 2014, and some people who saw us play in 2014 came back again to see us this year. We’re so grateful for their support. One really cool thing about our second UK tour was that we actually sold out of the CDs we brought. We filled a suitcase full of copies of 18, but we sold them all during our first two concerts. I thought I had packed more than enough albums, but we didn’t have any for our final gig in the UK! Thanks to everyone who bought our new album. You guys made my luggage much easier to carry on the way back to Korea! Next time we come, we’ll definitely need to pack a lot more albums.

Korean Indie music is becoming a hot topic, not just in the UK, but throughout the whole of Europe. Do you feel the market growth as performers in the middle of the bustle? What impact do you feel PATiENTS has on the way Korean indie music is portrayed in Europe?

We’ve definitely noticed an increase in the international attention Korean indie music is receiving, and we’re very happy about this! The market is still very small, but it’s cool that more and more bands are getting to share their music with a worldwide audience. As for PATiENTS, we’re trying hard to make a good impression on audiences with our music and our performances. Hopefully, if someone likes us, they’ll check out more Korean indie music too and discover the wealth of talent in our country’s indie scene. We’re learning lots every time we tour outside of Korea. We’re trying to share this information with other bands so that the whole indie scene can grow together.

My personal favourite song of yours is “Hybrid”. Which song is your ultimate favourite to perform?

I really love playing all of our songs, but if I have to choose favourites, I’ll say “Sipalsegi” and “Let’s Drive, Let’s Go!” I think the hardest song to perform is “High Level Darling”. When we wrote the song, we wanted to make it great so we made it kind of difficult. But thanks to lots of practice we’ve gotten used to it and we think we’re performing it well.

Unfortunately, other kinds of music besides K-pop, K-ballads and K-hiphop are not promoted a lot (if at all) within the Western Korean music scene. So when people hear your Korean punk music, what are the initial reactions? What do you feel could be done to change people’s preconceptions about Korean music?

We toured in Korea, the UK, and Taiwan and the reactions to our music have all been very positive. I’m not sure what can be done to change people’s preconceptions of Korean music. I guess Korean bands doing more tours and getting more media attention would help. It would be great to have more people know about PATiENTS’ music, but that’s not our goal. We just want to share good music and a positive attitude with anyone around the world who wants to listen. Even if the number of people is small, that’s okay. The most important thing is being able to do what we want, having fun, and living happily.

Patients at Liverpool Sound City 9

You’re pretty unique to the scene. Who are you inspired by when creating your music? And if you could collaborate with anyone at all, who would you chose?

Yes, our keyboard, bass, and drums set-up is definitely different in Korea’s indie scene. And each of us has different taste in music, which adds even more variety and colour to PATiENTS’ sound. If we could collaborate with anyone, I’d like for it to be Beethoven. It’s obviously never going to happen, but that’s still my dream pairing for us.

What can your fans in the UK expect to see from you in the future? Do you have any special plans for the rest of the year?

They can expect us to keep getting better and better. Our ultimate goal is just to be a band that has lots of awesome songs and puts on awesome live shows. Our plan is to keep working hard to make this happen. But this is actually a really good question! We’ve never thought much about fans’ expectations, but maybe we should. We’ve always just wanted to bring lots of fun to stages to share with them. If fans want PATiENTS to try to do other things in addition to that, please let us know! We love talking to people and are open to suggestions.

If you could say anything to your fans what would it be? Do you have a message for the readers of MCM Buzz?

Thanks so much for reading about PATiENTS. We’ve had a blast playing in the UK in 2014 and 2015 and want to try to come back again next year. We hope to see you in Korea, the UK, or somewhere else in the world soon!

If you get the chance to check these guys out live, I definitely recommend it! They know how to make a crowd move, and they rock it out pretty hard! As you can see from the interview, this band is a little different in terms of why they do what they do: it’s not always about the fame and the money, or the lavish lifestyle and the travelling. For PATiENTS, it’s all about conveying a sound, a song, or a movement to people around the world and introducing them to unexplored areas of the music industry. Yes, we all love our K-pop, but when you find bands like PATiENTS who are a whole new ball game both musically and personality-wise, it leads you to wonder what else might be out there.

PATiENTS’ latest album 18 is available to download from iTunes for $9.99 and is also on Bandcamp, priced at $5. Be sure to show your support to the band by following their Facebook page, or check out Sumin Jo on Twitter. A big thank you to Shawn Despres for his help.

F(X), Guckkasten and Jinjo Crew headline at The London Korean Festival

2007949_image_1-860x1024

We previously reported that South Korea would be making an appearance in Trafalgar Square on August 9th 2015 with the announcement of The London Korean Festival, which is being held by the Korean Tourism Organisation. The FREE one day event brings together an exciting mix of modern and traditional Korean culture. It has recently been announced that the five piece female super group F(x) will be headlining at Trafalgar Square’s first K-pop concert.

fxguck

F(x) are one of Korea’s leading K-pop groups, leading the Korean wave with their catchy electro-pop melodies and daring fashion. They are also an internet sensation on YouTube, with views in excess of 30 million for their eye catching videos and are part of the much loved SMEntertainment.

Korean rock fans will also be catered to as popular Korean psychedelic rockers Guckkasten are set to get you dancing with their performance as a live band. A firm favourite to many interested in the Korean music industry, it is going to be great to hear Guckkasten performing live!

World Champion B-boy group Jinjo Crew will be making an appearance, showing off their winning break dancing moves in a dance battle against the UK’s dance group Soul Mavericks.

If you are after something a little more traditional there will be a wonderful collection of hanboks, traditional South Korean dresses, on display as well as a Hanbok Fashion Show presenting the latest creations of the traditional, vibrantly coloured design. Whilst walking around be sure to pop into the The K-Fashion Pavilion, which will feature a selection of pop up stores with clothing lines and accessories from Korean designers featured in London Fashion Week.

Fans of traditional Korean performing arts will be treated to a range of instrumental music from the renowned National Gugak Centre, playing homage to thousands of years of tradition and history with their creative dances of peace, folk music, and introducing ganggangsullae, a 5,000 year old Korean dance that was first used to bring about a bountiful harvest.

Korean food is well loved in the capital, and is one of the tastiest, trendiest and healthiest cuisines in the world. Its growth in popularity with the help from food lovers allowed the Korean Tourism Organisation an area just for food. And boy are you in for a treat, with a live cooking demonstration from the Food Channel’s celebrity chef Judy Joo and her top cooking tips, there will also be a range of delicious meals and drinks on offer in the ‘Food Zone’ which will include stalls from the best of London’s Korean restaurants.

Korea is one of the leading countries in the gaming and technology world, and the Square’s K-Contents Zone’ will host a selection of online games, including an E-Sports area where visitors can compete in a range of virtual activities. Younger children can enjoy the K-character pavilion with soft play, arts, toys and a sticker wall. There will also be webtoons (online comics) to read as well as new animation screenings to watch and enjoy. Before computers there was only traditional folk games, such as Yut-nori (a stick-throwing board game), Tuho (arrow throwing) and Jegi-chagi (tassel kicking), all of which will be available for attendees to try out. If you have ever wanted to write your name in Korean calligraphy, then you can also have a go at the artistic tradition of artistic writing in Hangul.

Untitled 1

In the Cultural Tourism Experience Zone’ attendees can get creative by making traditional crafts or trying on Korea’s traditional ‘Hanbok’ dress, as well as enjoying a series of family workshops. Anyone wanting to try playing a traditional musical instrument, like a Gayageum or Janggu (the most widely used drum) or a Buk will be taught how to use them during a free ‘hands on’ music workshop.

The ‘Brand Zone’ will include two ambassadors of the Korean manufacturing and technology world from Hyundai Motors and LG Electronics, both of whom who will be showcasing their latest products, innovations and great offers.

The event is organised by the Korean Cultural Centre UK, Korea Tourism Organisation, Korea Creative Content Agency and supported by the Mayor of London. Throughout the event there will be a PSY inspired ‘Gangnam Style’ flash mob that will be encouraging everyone to join in and have a go at the popular fun dance craze that captured the world. The same flash mob will also be hitting the streets of London on a special themed bus the week before the event, encouraging everyone to get dancing and show off their moves at the festival.

TOPP DOGG_EUROPE 2015_FA

Following the announcement of TOPP DOGG’s first European showcase heading to London this September, we can now confirm that tickets are on sale with an official seating plan available. Back in December 2014 MCM Buzz announced that the Korean boy group would be touring the world with stops in Japan, Houston, Florida, Atlanta, South East Asia and Europe. It wasn’t long till our good friends at Jazzy Group US noted Topp Dogg’s popularity within Europe and decided to host the group’s first ever European showcase.

Consisting of twelve members – B-Joo, Hojoon, P-Goon, Yano, Nakta, A-Tom, Xero, Jenissi, Sangdo, Hansol, Kidoh, and Gohn (with a sub unit with the name “Under Dogg” consisting of Jiwon, Hyeontae, Andy A47, Jaehoon and former Topp Dogg member Seogoong) they were formed by Stardom Entertainment and debuted in 2013 with the song Follow Me from their debut album, Dogg’s Out. They also released a complex dance choreography video of Follow Me, showing the amount of work and effort they put into their performances.

Topp Dogg have embraced a lot of fan interest since the very beginning of their debut which allowed the group to successfully enter into the Korean music industry, leading to multiple repackaged albums and several releases. Known for their powerful dance routines, charismatic on-stage performances and extremely catchy songs, Topp Dogg have become one of the quickest rising idol rookie groups of the K-pop genre.

Hopefully the fans are as excited about the announcement of the group coming to London, Milan and Paris for their very first showcase tour. Topp Dogg hope to fulfill the wishes of the many European Topp Klass (Topp Dogg Fan Name), practicing extremely hard and putting on a show that is sure to leave them with a beautiful and fun memory. They would also like to reach out to K-pop fans, inviting them to join in the fun and games and enjoy the party atmosphere that will be held at the showcases. Below is all the information you need, such as venues, times, dates, and a seating plan.

Exclusive Interview: Boys Republic get personal before their Royal Tour

Boys Republic_Real Talk

Most of our dedicated K-pop readers will have seen the news that the K-pop boy group Boys Republic are coming to London Islington Academy on July 4th as part of their “Royal Tour“. Tickets are already on sale so be sure to grab yours as soon as possible.

Members Wonjun, Sunwoo, Minsu, Sungjun, and Suwoong have already sent their greetings to their European fans and are really excited to see everyone. So whilst they were still hyped up about their upcoming tour, we managed to grab a small interview with all of the members to see what makes Boys Republic a Korean boy group to watch.

– — – — – — – — –

You debuted in 2013 with “Party Rock” which bought a new flare to the K-pop world. Did you ever think you would get as far as you have today when you first started out?

We really appreciate all the fans who have supported us over time. It is all about them as to why we are here now.

What are Boys Republic’s favourite video games? Are there any games that inspired your music video?

We love to play GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and FIFA.

Your music is being listened to worldwide, what do you feel sets you apart from other artists?

We are not afraid of trying different types of music.

The dance choreography to your music can be very hard. Who out of the group is the best dancer?

Sungjun and Minsu easily master the choreography, especially Minsu as he learns choreography very fast. For new songs we practice more than two months before we start TV promotions.

Who is it that inspires you all? Is there anyone (from around the world) that inspires you to do what you do?

Always The Beatles, Shinhwa, and G.O.D.

Untitled 4

I recently watched one of your videos where the members dressed up in funny costumes. Just watching I felt embarrassed for you all, but what was your most embarrassing moment performing?

During one of our performances there was confetti and one piece went into one member’s mouth during the performance. It didn’t get caught on camera and fans in front saw it and laughed at them.

Fanservice is a big deal, especially for international fans. You had done a Lazer Tag fan meeting once. What other activities would you like to do with your fans in the future?

We’d like to do a charity event with Royal family.

Your last group release was “The Real One” in November 2014 with a modern Vs classic concept. Do you have any plans to release a new album or song for 2015?

Of course! We can’t tell you the details, but it will be awesome!
(E/N: Boys Republic have just released their new single and music video “Hello” which you can see below!)

“Rookie King: Boys Republic” was a much loved TV show for fans worldwide, allowing a bridge between the idols and their fans. How would you like to interact with your fans in the future?

We want to hold a small concert with fans.

You are travelling around Europe on your tour soon, but have any of you previously visited any of the countries you are going to?

It is our first time to go to Europe and we would love to go to all countries, but Paris, France should be a must!

And lastly, do you have anything to say to your UK fans, and readers of MCM Buzz?

We hope you will keep supporting us please!

– — – — – — – — –

A big thank you to B7klan and Boys Republic for their cooperation and time, and be sure to keep checking back to MCM Buzz for news and updates about Boys Republic’s European tour. Below is their latest release “Hello“. You can also view our own Boys Republic picture folder on the MCM Buzz Facebook page.

Korean Indie Band "Juck Juck Grunzie" To Feature At Glastonbury

Juck Juck Grunzie 1

For people interested in Korean music but looking for something a little different from your usual K-pop or K-HipHop, the Korean Indie scene is possibly one of the best places to look. Seoul has a lot to offer for music fans, but one group that seems to be making leaps and bounds in the Western music market is the psychedelic noise rock quartet “Juck Juck Grunzie“.

Originally, Juck Juck Grunzie was formed as an all-female band back in 2007, but along the lines things got mixed up and male drummer Kyung Hyun Lee joined vocalist and synth player Ah-Reum Lee, guitarist Jee-Hye Ham and bassist Hyojeong Shim. Capturing the attention of many within Seoul’s indie scene by wearing only lingerie for their first performance, the group came second place at the 2012’s Hello Rookie finals in Korea. In November 2013, the group to released their first full-length album, “Psycho”, which brought them worldwide success, highlighting their progression from post-punk roots into noisier and more psychedelic sonic terrains. In the summer of 2014, the band was featured as one of the central subjects of Van’s “Off the Wall” documentary series about South Korea’s indie scene and captured the attention of the British Glastonbury Festival organizers.

Juck Juck Grunzie 3

Juck Juck Grunzie’s music can only be described as marrying irregular rhythms with chaotic soundscapes, where the sounds explore the boundaries between dreams and nightmares to create something dark, mysterious, and hauntingly beautiful. Several major outlets have praised their work. Said MTV Iggy:  “This is a band that I’ve hoped and prayed would some day exist — four (now three with the addition of a guy drummer, but still) bitches in fishnets and leather jackets who birth Le Tigre post-punk fed through a Nirvana machine.” Meanwhile, Asian music leaders Daum Music described their music as, “Noise rock that is both dreamy and limitless. Mixing genres (Juck Juck Grunzie) has created music that is at once improvisational, creative, and unique.”

The band with be gracing Europe with a tour that will start at the biggest live music events in the UK, including Glastonbury Festival on June 25th. The tour will end in Berlin on July 3rd.  Below are a list of places to grab a chance of seeing the band perform live, and if their previous live performances in Korea are anything is to go by, you can expect exciting shows featuring pajamas, footballs and lingerie.

Create your own Vocaloid hologram concert with Hako Vision from 'Something Kawaii'

505696ae58e821347851950hatsunemikumigerunaluka

Whilst walking around the traders’ hall at the MCM London Comic Con I noticed something very unique and very cool that every Vocaloid loving fan simply must have. Taking pride of place on the Something Kawaii stall I was intrigued by a small box which had a movie playing a Hatsune Miku hologram concert song. Above the box was placed a mobile phone which I believe the owner had placed there to keep safe – but there was more to that box than I originally thought!

After taking a few snaps of the stall – which definitely lives up to its namesake, I asked about the box. It turns out that it is called Hako Vision from Bandai. Basically you buy a plain looking cardboard box with a plastic film surrounding it. At first it appeared to be a gimmick, that you needed to press a button for the hologram concert to begin – I was totally wrong! After you unpack your box, you need to use your smartphone to scan the QR code on the side of the box, after which you will be given a choice of two songs to pick from. You then have to place the screen of your smartphone down onto the top of the box and it creates a 3D hologram concert.

Something Kawaii are the exclusive UK retailers for the Hatune Miku Hako Vision, and at just £6.95 it’s a total steal! Check out the video below, and make sure you check out their website.
